"The Sokal Hoax: At Whom Are We Laughing?"
Physics Today (September 1998)
In 1996, the physicist Alan Sokal submitted a fake article to Social Text, a postmodern journal devoted to the sociology of science: "Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity". It was published without objection though it was full of senseless claims, being a parody of physics misuse in political philosophy. The article and numerous comments can be found on Sokal's webpage on the Social Text affair. (See also the book "Fashionable Nonsense" by Alan Sokal and Jean Bricmont.)
Beller is an expert in the history of quantum mechanics. She maintains that it is not entirely fair to blame contemporary postmodern philosophers for drawing nonsensical conclusions from quantum physics (as has happened in the context of the "Social Text Affair"), since many such conclusions were drawn by some of the leading quantum physicists themselves.
